Efforts to Minimize Public Damage
The police announced on November 30 that they are focusing their investigation on determining the circumstances of the personal information leak at Coupang.
Yoo Jaeseong, Acting Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, stated, "Since a large number of people have been affected, we will conduct a thorough investigation to uncover the truth, swiftly apprehend the suspect, and work with relevant ministries to minimize the damage to the public."
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency began a preliminary inquiry into the Coupang personal information leak on November 21, and on November 25, after receiving Coupang's official complaint, the case was upgraded to a formal investigation.
In its complaint, Coupang requested an investigation into an "unidentified individual" on suspicion of violating the Information and Communications Network Act by unlawfully accessing the network.
Initially, Coupang reported on November 19 that information such as customer names, emails, and addresses had been leaked from 4,536 accounts. However, during the investigation, it was confirmed that the scale of the leak had expanded to 33.79 million accounts.
Coupang explained that customer names, email addresses, and information entered in the delivery address book were leaked, but payment and login information were not included in the breach.
