Gyeongju City Council Members Jeong Heetaek and Lee Kanghee Visit Prostitution District Redevelopment Sites in Paju and Jeonju

Gyeongju City Council members Jeong Heetaek and Lee Kanghee visited the sites of former prostitution districts in Paju and Jeonju over two days on November 24 and 25.

This visit was organized to seek solutions to the prostitution district issue within Gyeongju and to explore strategies for local revitalization.

The 'Yongjugol' prostitution district in Paju was formed as a U.S. military camp town during the Korean War, and since 2023, strong administrative enforcement and demolition work have been underway.

'Seonmichon,' the prostitution district in Jeonju, was once known as the largest such area in North Jeolla Province, but it was dismantled in 2022 due to a cultural regeneration project that began in 2014.

During the visit, a comprehensive discussion was held on topics including: the current status of closing prostitution districts in Paju and Jeonju; cooperation systems between local governments and related agencies; the roles of dedicated departments; measures to protect the human rights and support the self-reliance of sex workers; and urban regeneration plans following the removal of these districts.

Jeong Heetaek stated, "With the number of tourists expected to surge after the 2025 APEC Summit, it is urgent to address the prostitution district located in downtown Gyeongju," adding, "Practical measures, such as establishing a dedicated team for the district's redevelopment, must be put in place."

Lee Kanghee emphasized, "Communication and empathy with local residents are crucial to resolving prostitution issues," and added, "Sex workers and the local community must work together to create warm support and meaningful change."
