Yecheon Museum Rises to Undisputed No. 1 Among Gyeongbuk Public Museums

Scored 95.5 Points Over Three-Year Evaluation
Selected as Top Institution Just Three Years After Reopening

Yecheon’s cultural capabilities have once again made a strong impression in a nationwide evaluation. This result serves as an indicator of the maturity of local cultural policy, as Yecheon Museum is recognized not just as a local museum but as a comprehensive cultural institution excelling in research, exhibitions, and education.

Yecheon Museum was selected as the top institution in Gyeongbuk in the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism’s “2025 Public Museum Evaluation and Certification.” This evaluation was based on the museum’s performance over the three-year period from 2022 to 2024. Yecheon Museum received the highest score among 25 public museums in the province, achieving 95.5 points.


The museum earned high marks across 14 categories, including exhibitions, education, collection of materials, expertise, and operational management. In particular, its rapid enhancement of expertise and expansion of the local cultural foundation since its reopening in 2021 were highlighted as outstanding evaluation factors.


◆ Secured 15.4 billion KRW in cultural project funding and designated 17 cultural heritage items... Solidifying its role as a regional cultural platform

Over the past two years, Yecheon Museum has secured 15.4 billion KRW in national and provincial funding through selection for 10 public project competitions. The museum also led the systematic discovery and preservation of local cultural assets by promoting the designation of a total of 17 cultural heritage items, including one national treasure, 13 Gyeongbuk tangible cultural heritage items, and three cultural heritage materials.


In addition, balanced growth across all areas-exhibitions, research, and education-was cited as a key reason for the museum’s top ranking, with eight book publications, five academic conferences, and 391 annual education programs (8,938 participants completed the programs).

Kim Hakdong, Governor of Yecheon County, stated, “Our efforts to establish an open cultural space based on Yecheon’s history and culture have been recognized through this evaluation. Moving forward, we will continue to enhance local identity and cultural sophistication through Yecheon Museum.”


◆ Solidifying its status as the top public museum in the province... Expanding community-centered programs

Building on this achievement, Yecheon Museum plans to continue its efforts in the discovery and preservation of regional cultural heritage, development of specialized content, and further expansion of accessible and participatory programs for local residents. A museum official commented, “We will further strengthen our role as a cultural platform that local residents can truly experience.”
