Samyoung Shares Up 40% This Month
Third-Quarter Operating Profit Up 155% Year-on-Year
Structural Increase in Demand for Capacitor Films
As the artificial intelligence (AI) industry develops, investment in data centers is increasing. In the domestic stock market, there is growing interest in listed companies that produce essential components and materials for data centers. This is why the corporate value of Samyoung, which manufactures capacitor film, has been steadily rising.
According to the financial investment industry on November 26, Samyoung’s stock price has risen by 40.4% so far this month. Its market capitalization has expanded to 235 billion won.
With operating profit increasing in the third quarter of this year, the stock price has continued its upward trend. In the third quarter of this year, the company posted sales of 45.8 billion won and operating profit of 5.6 billion won. Compared to the same period last year, sales increased by 47.2%, and operating profit surged by 154.8%.
Capacitor film is a key material for film-type capacitors, which help stabilize the flow of electricity in electronic devices. AI data centers that use graphics processing unit (GPU) servers consume three to ten times more power than those using standard central processing unit (CPU) servers. As a result, demand for power infrastructure and power electronics devices inevitably increases, which also impacts demand for film-type capacitors. Film-type capacitors are more price competitive and have a longer lifespan compared to other capacitors. They also operate reliably under high voltage and high temperature conditions. The thickness of the film used in power devices for AI data centers is about 3.5 to 4.5 micrometers.
Samyoung’s capacitor film exports grew from 7.6 million dollars in the first quarter of this year to 8.9 million dollars in the second quarter. Demand for capacitor film is increasing across various sectors, including energy storage systems (ESS), power generation facilities, solar power, home appliances, and power conversion systems (PCS) for electrical transformers.
Tae Woo Kwon, a researcher at Hana Securities, explained, “A 1-megawatt (MW) PCS for ESS is a large facility about half the size of a container. Depending on specifications, the industry estimates that each unit requires about 6.1 to 13.6 kilometers of 4-micrometer film.” To build a medium-to-large-scale ESS equipped with 100 units of 1MW PCS, the required amount of film would reach 610 to 1,360 kilometers.
Kwon added, “This is the background for the structural increase in demand for capacitor film, in line with the expansion of power infrastructure. Capacitor film is emerging as a strategic material that determines not only the efficiency of power conversion but also the reliability of the system, highlighting its growing importance.”
Hana Securities estimates that Samyoung will achieve sales of 163 billion won and operating profit of 15.6 billion won this year. This represents an increase of 29.3% and 71.7%, respectively, compared to last year.
