Yangyang County Official Harasses Sanitation Workers... Chief of Staff Kang Hoonshik Orders Audit and Strict Action Yonhap News Agency

On November 23, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoonshik ordered an audit and strict measures regarding the harassment incident involving sanitation workers that surfaced in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province.


The presidential spokesperson announced through a press release that "Chief of Staff Kang, after consulting with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the police, and other relevant agencies, instructed that an immediate audit, investigation, and criminal probe be launched into the public official in question. This includes determining violations of the Local Public Officials Act, the Labor Standards Act, and any criminal acts such as assault, threats, and coercion, with strict action to be taken accordingly."


Additionally, the presidential office stated that Chief of Staff Kang also ordered a thorough audit or investigation into the management and supervision practices of the managers and superiors responsible for overseeing the public official in question, with follow-up measures to be taken based on the results.


The presidential office emphasized, "If such acts are found to be true, they not only seriously undermine the basic attitude and dignity required of public officials, but also constitute criminal behavior that must never be tolerated."


Recently, in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, allegations have surfaced that a Grade 7 public official repeatedly harassed sanitation workers, including acts of assault, verbal abuse, threats, and coercion to engage in stock trading, among other inappropriate conduct.
