Filming to Begin in Los Angeles Next February
Co-Produced by Directors Hwang Donghyuk and David Fincher
An American adaptation of Netflix's 'Squid Game' is set to be produced.
On November 20 (local time), U.S. media outlets such as Collider reported that 'Squid Game: America' was recently added to the list of upcoming projects on the website of the Hollywood organization Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
According to the site, filming is scheduled to begin on February 26 next year in Los Angeles, with directors Hwang Donghyuk and David Fincher listed as part of the production team.
The synopsis states, "This spin-off, the American version of the Korean hit series, is set in the same universe, but viewers will see how the games are handled in the United States."
Collider noted, "Although director Fincher himself has not yet commented, this is the first concrete update regarding the American version of Squid Game in several months." The outlet predicted that if filming begins early next year, the release is likely to be around Christmas 2028.
Director Hwang denied rumors that he would oversee the American spin-off in an interview with Korean media in June, but left open the possibility for the future. At the time, he said, "I have not officially heard anything," but added, "I am a big fan of director Fincher, so if I receive a request, I would seriously consider it."
Director Fincher, a Hollywood heavyweight, has directed films such as 'Se7en,' 'Fight Club,' and 'The Social Network,' and has been nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Director.
Netflix has not yet released an official statement regarding the production of the American version of Squid Game.
