Coupang Exposes Names and Address Books of 4,500 Customers (Comprehensive)

A data breach at Coupang has exposed the personal information of approximately 4,500 customers, including their names and email addresses.

On November 20, Coupang notified customers that "on November 18, it was confirmed that customer personal information was accessed without authorization." The company stated, "The information that was accessed includes names, email addresses, shipping address books (phone numbers and addresses), and the five most recent order details."

Coupang added, "After detecting this activity, we blocked the access route used by the third party, and so far, there have been no confirmed cases of the accessed information being misused." The company is currently monitoring the situation.

The scope of the exposure involves information related to approximately 4,500 customers. Coupang emphasized, "There was no access to customer payment information, and such data remains protected." However, the company also advised customers to "be especially cautious of phone calls and text messages impersonating Coupang." Coupang issued an apology to affected customers and requested that any inquiries be directed to the customer service center.

Coupang has reported the identified cause and developments to the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Internet & Security Agency, and the Personal Information Protection Commission.
