On November 19, Chuncheon City in Gangwon Province (Mayor Yook Donghan) held a kickoff briefing in the city hall's medium conference room for the "Basic Plan Establishment and Feasibility Study for the Multipurpose Gymnasium" project. Through this study, the city plans to focus on analyzing appropriate demand and scale, identifying optimal operation and funding strategies based on similar case studies, developing specialization strategies by incorporating Chuncheon’s key projects with a focus on Taekwondo, and exploring ways to link the facility with local resources after construction.

The study will be conducted over five months, during which a wide range of opinions from citizens and experts in various fields will be gathered to establish a highly sophisticated strategy for building a specialized multipurpose gymnasium. On this day, Mayor Yook Donghan also attended the briefing, listened to the project’s implementation plan, and expressed his commitment to the construction of the multipurpose gymnasium.

The new multipurpose gymnasium project aims to create an indoor facility centered on Taekwondo that can host various domestic and international sporting events. The plan centers on a site at 329-1 Songam-dong Sports Town, with a total floor area of 12,000 square meters and more than 5,000 spectator seats.

Through the construction of this multipurpose gymnasium, the city expects to create a new turning point for Songam Sports Town and to replace the aging Chuncheon Hoban Gymnasium. In particular, as more than 30 years have passed since Hoban Gymnasium was built, its outdated facilities are no longer suitable for hosting international Taekwondo competitions or various leisure and sports events. Additionally, there is a lack of hub facilities within Songam Sports Town to integrate sports infrastructure such as the World Taekwondo (WT) headquarters and the air dome. The city believes that this new multipurpose gymnasium will serve as a key foundation for attracting global sports events and enhancing the region’s sports competitiveness.

A city official stated, "We will prepare thoroughly with detailed analysis to ensure the construction of the multipurpose gymnasium becomes a new turning point for Songam Sports Town."
