The possibility of connecting Hwaseong Dongtan Station to the extended Bundang Line, which runs from Giheung Station in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province to Osan, has increased.

According to Hwaseong City on November 18, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the relevant government authority, announced its willingness to accept the extension of the Bundang Line passing through Dongtan Station. This announcement was made during the National Assembly’s Land, Infrastructure and Transport Committee meeting held the previous day, after Assemblyman Jeon Yonggi of the Democratic Party of Korea raised the issue as an additional opinion during the review of next year’s budget bill.

The Bundang Line extension project is a metropolitan railway project that will run from Giheung Station, pass through the Dongtan 2 New Town area in Hwaseong, and extend to Osan. The project was included in the government’s “4th National Railway Network Construction Plan” in 2021, and a preliminary feasibility study by the National Railway Authority was completed last year.

At the end of last year, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport applied to the Ministry of Economy and Finance to have the project selected for a preliminary feasibility study, which is the next administrative step. Currently, supplementary work is underway to secure the project’s selection as a study subject.

Hwaseong City has also expressed its strong support for this policy direction from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. If Dongtan Station is connected to the new line, not only will accessibility improve for neighboring municipalities such as Yongin, Seongnam, and Osan, but commuting to Seoul’s Gangnam area is also expected to become more convenient through transfers to the Shinbundang Line.

Jung Myunggeun, Mayor of Hwaseong, stated, “The Bundang Line extension will pass through major hubs in Dongtan New Town, including Dongtan Technovalley, Dongtan Station, and the Dongtan General Industrial Complex. This railway infrastructure will enhance the city’s competitiveness and address current metropolitan transportation inconveniences. We will actively cooperate with relevant agencies to ensure the smooth progress of the project.”
