A bus driver involved in a seven-vehicle pileup, which included a bus and several passenger cars in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, has been booked by police.
On November 17, the Yangcheon Police Station in Seoul announced that a man in his 50s, identified as Mr. A, has been booked on charges of violating the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Settlement of Traffic Accidents (resulting in injury).
At around 7:11 a.m. on the same day, Mr. A rear-ended an SUV that was waiting at a traffic signal in Shintree Park, Sinjeong-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. Without reducing speed, he then ran a red light at the intersection, colliding with three passenger cars and one ladder truck in the second and third lanes, before crashing into another bus that was entering a bus stop.
As a result of the accident, 14 people, including bus passengers and vehicle drivers, complained of pain in their chest, cervical, and lumbar regions and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Mr. A claimed at the scene that there was a brake malfunction, but upon reviewing CCTV footage and the bus tachometer (a device that measures engine RPM), police confirmed that he had pressed the accelerator pedal.
The police stated, "We are focusing on the possibility of pedal misapplication and will conduct a thorough investigation into the cause of the accident going forward."
