Groundbreaking Ceremony Set for November 20 at Former Jeonbang and Ilshin Textile Site
Contractor for Residential-Commercial Complex Still Undecided, Discussions Ongoing
Gwangju's first integrated shopping mall, The Hyundai Gwangju, has finalized its construction consortium, selecting Junghung Construction, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, and Woomee Construction as contractors. Although the original goal was to break ground by the end of October, the selection was delayed due to prolonged negotiations over construction costs. The groundbreaking ceremony is now scheduled for November 20 at the former Jeonbang and Ilshin Textile sites in Im-dong, Buk-gu.
According to Hyundai Department Store Group on November 13, The Hyundai Gwangju recently selected the Junghung, Hyundai, and Woomee consortium as its construction partner. The project aims for completion by the end of 2027, with plans to open in the first half of 2028.
The Hyundai Gwangju will feature a total floor area of 272,955 square meters and a retail area of 100,890 square meters, spanning from six basement levels to eight floors above ground. The facility will offer shopping, cultural, and leisure amenities. Its scale is approximately 1.4 times that of The Hyundai Seoul.
Meanwhile, the residential-commercial complex development project being pursued on the same site has yet to finalize a construction company. Champions City Complex Development PFV stated that, since POSCO E&C and Daewoo E&C, the joint preferred bidders, withdrew from negotiations in September, discussions are ongoing with three to four other construction firms.
Champions City plans to select a contractor and launch its first round of sales around March next year.
