Yanggu County in Gangwon Province has become the first in the province to install the 'Smart Drinking Water Safety Information System' at Gangwon Foreign Language High School, creating an environment where students can safely and confidently use cleaner tap water. This initiative allows real-time monitoring of the tap water quality used for school meals and daily life, significantly improving the hygiene and reliability of the school's water supply.
The 'Smart Drinking Water Safety Information System' continuously monitors the quality of the water supply pipes to the school 24 hours a day. If abnormal water quality, such as turbidity, is detected, the system automatically discharges the contaminated water and activates a shut-off valve to prevent contamination of the water storage tank in advance. As a result, the safety of tap water used for school meals has been further strengthened.
Additionally, an on-campus water quality information system has been established to publicly release key water quality data in real time, including turbidity, residual chlorine, pH, and mineral concentrations. Staff, students, and parents can directly check the status of the tap water, which is expected to contribute to the establishment of a transparent and trustworthy tap water management system.
Kim Chunho, Director of the Waterworks and Sewerage Office, stated, "Since schools are places where the health and safety of students are the highest priority, stable management of tap water is essential." He added, "Based on this pilot installation, we plan to expand the system to all schools with meal facilities in the county by 2027."
He further emphasized, "Even a single water quality incident at a multi-use facility such as a school can lead to large-scale damage. Therefore, establishing a smart, prevention-focused water quality management system is the most effective measure."
This project has introduced an AI-powered remote monitoring system and automatic drainage function, enabling efficient facility operation. In addition, by analyzing water quality data as big data, an operational system that reduces carbon emissions has been established. As a result, it is being recognized as a 'smart water quality management model' that enhances both safety and sustainability.
Based on the results of this pilot project, Yanggu County plans to establish a system for transparently releasing tap water quality information so that students and parents can have peace of mind. The county also intends to focus its administrative capabilities on creating a clean tap water environment that can be trusted and consumed anytime, anywhere.
