Hoseo University Clinical Laboratory Science Students Win Academic Award for 'GCK Genetic Variant-BMI-Diabetes Association Study'

Hoseo University has once again demonstrated its status as a research-oriented institution. Kang Minji and Choi Jiyoung, students from the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, received the Excellent Poster Award at the Korean Society for Clinical Genetic Testing Fall Conference, drawing attention as a model case of undergraduate-led research.

According to Hoseo University on November 12, the students' research was conducted under the theme, "The Impact of GCK Genetic Variants and High Body Mass Index on the Progression from Dysglycemia to Diabetes: Results from a 16-Year Follow-Up Study in Koreans."

The research team analyzed diabetes-related genetic factors using Korean genome epidemiology data from adults aged 40 and above, a group with increasing prevalence of metabolic diseases. They found that when a specific variant of the GCK gene is combined with a high body mass index (BMI), the progression to diabetes accelerates.

This study attracted academic interest for scientifically elucidating the impact of the interaction between obesity and genetic factors on the development of diabetes.

In particular, it reaffirmed that BMI management is a key factor in diabetes prevention, and is expected to contribute to future disease prediction and the establishment of personalized health management strategies.

Since 2019, the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science has continued to achieve research-oriented educational outcomes, with undergraduates writing papers themselves and being listed as first authors in journals registered with the National Research Foundation of Korea (KCI).

Additionally, the department operates advanced tracks such as non-clinical trials, clinical physiology testing, and genome analysis, enabling students to experience the entire research process from experimental design to data analysis.

Jung Dongjoo, head of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science, stated, "Hoseo University is strengthening education so that students can acquire research design and data analysis skills even at the undergraduate level. Through education that bridges the field and research, we will nurture innovative talent to play active roles in industry and healthcare."
