Drunk Driver Detained and Referred to Prosecution Over Fatal Accident Involving Japanese Mother and Daughter

A driver who caused two casualties by hitting a Japanese mother and daughter with his car while driving under the influence during their sightseeing trip in Seoul has been handed over to the prosecution.

The Hyehwa Police Station in Seoul announced on November 11 that a man in his 30s, surnamed Seo, has been arrested and referred to the prosecution on charges of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act and causing death or injury by dangerous driving under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.


Seo is accused of driving under the influence and striking the mother and daughter, who were walking across a crosswalk at the Heunginjimun Intersection in Jongno-gu, Seoul, at around 10 p.m. on November 2. According to the police investigation, Seo drank about three bottles of soju at a restaurant in Jongno 5-ga, then drove his own electric vehicle for approximately 1 kilometer before causing the accident.


The Japanese mother and daughter had entered Korea on the morning of November 2 and were scheduled to depart on the afternoon of November 4. It was reported that on the day of the accident, after shopping at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP), they were on their way to see the Naksan Fortress Trail when the incident occurred. As a result of the accident, the mother, who was in her 50s, died.
