According to the county on November 5, this meeting was organized to honor the achievements of individuals from Gochang who participated in the anti-Japanese independence movement, such as the student boycott and the March for Independence in support of the Gwangju Student Movement while attending Gochang High School, and to express gratitude to their descendants.
Twelve descendants of Kim Jaecheon (Gimje, North Jeolla), Kwak Gilsu (Jeongeup, North Jeolla), Lee Eunsuk (Yongin, Gyeonggi), Park Bugil (Seoul), and Oh Heungtak (Gochang, North Jeolla) attended the event.
This honor is the result of Gochang County’s active efforts since 2023 to discover and recommend independence patriots for official recognition and awards.
In particular, in October last year, County Governor Shim Deokseop personally visited the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs to submit award applications for 103 independence activists. As a result, on March 1 this year, seven individuals, including Yoon Ukha, who participated in the student movement, were recognized as independence patriots, and an additional four were honored on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day.
County Governor Shim Deokseop said, "I sincerely thank the bereaved families who visited Gochang, and it is the love for the country shown by our forebears that made today’s Republic of Korea possible. We will not forget their spirit, and all county residents will carry it forward together."
Meanwhile, the county plans to continue strengthening its respect for independence activists and to carry out various initiatives to shed new light on the region’s history of anti-Japanese movements.
