Daegu Veterans Office Selects 'Daegu Normal School Anti-Japanese Student Uprising Memorial Stone' and 'Independence Movement Memorial Tower' as November Memorial Facilities

Honoring the Spirit of the Region's Leading Student Independence Movements on the 80th Anniversary of Liberation

The Daegu Regional Office of Veterans Affairs (headed by Kim Jongsul) has selected the 'Daegu Normal School Anti-Japanese Student Uprising Memorial Stone' in Jung-gu, Daegu, and the 'Daegu Normal School Students Independence Movement Memorial Tower' in Dalseo-gu as the Memorial Facilities of November.

This selection was made to commemorate the 80th anniversary of liberation, to reflect on the historical significance of the region's representative student independence movements, and to help citizens become more familiar with these memorial facilities.

In 1938, students at Daegu Normal School resisted Japanese colonial education by forming secret organizations such as the 'Literature and Arts Department,' 'Research Society,' and 'Dahyeokdang,' and carried out activities to raise national consciousness. However, in 1941, when their activities were discovered by the Japanese police, more than 300 people, including students, faculty, and parents, were arrested in what became known as the 'Daegu Normal School Incident.'

Among them, 35 were imprisoned, and five individuals-Kang Duan, Park Jemin, Park Chanung, Seo Mingu, and Jang Sepa-died in prison due to torture and malnutrition.

To honor their spirit, the 'Daegu Normal School Anti-Japanese Student Uprising Memorial Stone' was erected on November 3, 1973, on the campus of the Affiliated Middle School of Kyungpook National University College of Education, and the 'Daegu Normal School Students Independence Movement Memorial Tower' was built on March 1, 1998, at the People’s Hill in Duryu Park.

Recognizing their historical value, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs designated the memorial stone as a memorial facility on February 14, 2003, and the memorial tower on June 8, 2011.

The Daegu Regional Office of Veterans Affairs stated, "We hope this selection will serve as an opportunity for local residents to reflect on the history and spirit of the anti-Japanese student movement," adding that it plans to promote the spread of a culture of remembrance in daily life centered around these memorial facilities.
