Syrian National Caught Preparing Bomb Attack in Berlin, Germany

According to reports from the daily Tagesspiegel and other outlets on November 3 (local time), Berlin prosecutors arrested a 22-year-old Syrian national on charges of plotting a terrorist attack and distributing propaganda materials, and issued a warrant for his detention. Prosecutors searched three residences in the city, deployed a police special operations unit, and seized materials used for manufacturing explosives.

According to local media, investigators obtained evidence that the suspect was planning a suicide bombing in Berlin. The suspect had repeatedly uploaded propaganda music from the Islamic extremist militant group Islamic State (IS). After entering Germany in 2023, the apprehended suspect was granted subsidiary protection. Subsidiary protection is a humanitarian residence permit granted in consideration of conditions in the person's home country, even if the individual does not qualify for asylum.
