Kim Youngrok, Governor of Jeollanam-do, met with Chey Tae-won, Chairman of SK Group, at the "SK AI SUMMIT 2025" held at COEX in Seoul on November 3 to discuss cooperation plans for the joint construction of the "Global AI Data Center" by SK and OpenAI.

This meeting was a follow-up to the "OpenAI-SK Jeonnam AI Data Center Construction Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)" announced on October 1. Since 2019, Jeonnam Province has declared its Blue Economy vision and has been working to attract high-tech industries based on abundant renewable energy resources.

During the meeting, Jeonnam Province and SK Group discussed follow-up measures regarding the construction of the OpenAI-dedicated Jeonnam AI Data Center.

To expedite the early construction of the data center, Jeonnam Province plans to form a task force with relevant organizations to quickly proceed with administrative procedures and to establish a support center in Seoul for close assistance. In the future, if Jeonnam Province is selected as the site for the National AI Computing Center, it plans to develop into the AI capital of the Asia-Pacific region by linking with the global AI data center.

Regarding these future plans, Chairman Chey's side responded that they would "actively review the details in consultation with OpenAI."

Governor Kim stated, "I deeply appreciate that SK Group, a global leader in the AI industry, is considering the Jeonnam AI Data Center," adding, "Jeonnam Province will focus all its capabilities to ensure the successful establishment of the AI data center." He continued, "With this cooperation as a starting point, we will do our utmost to make Jeonnam the core hub of Korea's AI industry and a center of global technological innovation."
