The "Walkable Communication Theme Road" initiative being promoted by Seogu District in Gwangju is receiving a strong response from local residents.
On October 31, Seogu introduced "Romantic Night Market Yummy Road (夜味, Yummy Road)" at Uncheon Terrace Road in Sangmu 2-dong (the area around Uncheon Station Food Alley).
This event was a festival jointly organized by merchants from the alleyway shopping district and local residents. The Uncheon Terrace Road area was transformed into a car-free street, where a variety of cultural performances such as busking, DJing, and flea markets took place. Merchants also personally packaged and sold food, offering visitors both the "joy of eating" and the "flavor of communication."
Citizens who visited the site commented, "The dark and quiet alley has turned into a beautiful festival venue," and expressed hopes that "events like this, where families can enjoy weekends together, will continue in the future."
Previously, Seogu designated Modu Moa-gil in Pungam-dong as a "Walkable Communication Theme Road" and conducted seasonal programs such as outdoor water play areas and picnics. On November 4, a festival for children and families is also scheduled to be held at Gamthan Hero, a child-friendly street in Chipyeong-dong.
Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seogu District, stated, "The Communication Theme Road is a stage for everyday culture, where residents come together and local alley businesses are revitalized. We will continue to develop communication-themed streets tailored to the characteristics of each area, fostering a vibrant alleyway culture where people can walk and linger."
