Key Infrastructure for the Sustainable Development of Seongju County and Chilgok County
Ongoing Communication with Local and Central Governments to Ensure Swift Project Progress
Assemblyman Jeong Heeyong (People Power Party, Goryeong County, Seongju County, Chilgok County in North Gyeongsang Province) announced on November 1 that the 'Muju-Daegu Expressway Construction Project,' which will connect Seongju County and Chilgok County in North Gyeongsang Province, has been selected as a target project for the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
The Muju-Daegu Expressway serves as a key axis of the third east-west corridor. By connecting the northern regions of Jeolla and Gyeongsang, including North Jeolla Province, Daegu, and North Gyeongsang Province, it aims to strengthen interregional exchange and resolve the discontinuity in the third east-west axis of the national arterial road network. The project involves constructing a new four-lane road (84.1 km) between Muju County in North Jeolla Province and Seongju County and Chilgok County in North Gyeongsang Province.

Since the establishment of the national arterial road network plan in 1992, the third east-west corridor expressway has seen little progress in individual sections due to insufficient economic feasibility. In response, North Gyeongsang Province, Seongju County, and others have sought ways to improve economic viability and address regional underdevelopment. They reorganized the project as the 'Muju-Seongju-Daegu' section and applied for a preliminary feasibility study in August.
Assemblyman Jeong emphasized, "The construction of the Muju-Seongju-Chilgok-Daegu Expressway, which will create a new four-lane road (84.1 km) from Muju County in North Jeolla Province to Seongju County and Chilgok County in North Gyeongsang Province, is a core infrastructure for the sustainable development of Seongju County and Chilgok County." He added, "By connecting the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport, Saemangeum, and other inland wide-area transportation networks, it is expected to form a new economic belt linking the West Sea and East Sea regions, greatly contributing to east-west harmony and balanced regional development."
He continued, "There are still many procedures to go through, including passing the preliminary feasibility study, securing national funding, design, and groundbreaking. I will do my utmost to ensure the project progresses swiftly by maintaining ongoing communication with local governments and central ministries, so that regional development and long-standing local needs can be addressed."
