On October 31, domestic battery startup Libest announced that it has successfully begun mass production of high-energy-density aviation batteries based on silicon anodes, in collaboration with US-based Amprius Technologies.
Libest plans to produce Amprius’s aviation batteries at its production line in Daejeon headquarters. Amprius Technologies previously revealed in June that it had signed a contract with a leading Korean battery manufacturer for the production of silicon anode batteries. The annual production capacity is at the gigawatt (GW) scale.
According to Amprius, these batteries provide high energy and high output suitable for advanced drones. Silicon anode materials are attracting attention as next-generation materials because they can store more energy than conventional graphite anodes.
Libest explained, “This mass production is the first achievement since the official establishment of the manufacturing collaboration system between the two companies,” adding, “It marks the beginning of a full-scale global supply system utilizing Korea as a production base.”
Libest emphasized that it was selected as Amprius’s key manufacturing partner based on its understanding of high-specification batteries and its capabilities in process stabilization and quality control. Starting with the supply of aviation batteries, the two companies plan to expand their cooperation into various application fields such as robotics, lightweight mobility, and artificial intelligence (AI).
Libest CEO Kim Juseong stated, “By combining the battery technologies of Libest and Amprius, we are now able to stably produce high-performance aviation batteries in Korea,” adding, “This collaboration will serve as an opportunity for Korea’s manufacturing role to expand through Libest.”
Amprius CEO Kang Sun said, “Libest is a reliable partner with the technology and experience necessary for high-performance battery manufacturing,” adding, “This collaboration is a win-win model that combines the technological strengths of both companies and enables us to grow together.”
