A Meeting of the Gayageum and the Violin
On October 31, Goryeong County in North Gyeongsang Province (Governor Lee Namcheol) announced that it had discussed ways to promote exchange and cooperation in the fields of culture, tourism, and the arts with Cremona City, Italy, at the Italian Ambassador's residence in Korea.
Cremona City, located in the Lombardy region of Italy, is known as the "City of Violins," recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage site, and is famous as the birthplace of the world-renowned Stradivarius violins. Goryeong County previously signed memorandums of understanding for mutual exchange and cooperation with Cremona City in both 2014 and 2023.
The meeting was attended by Lee Namcheol, Governor of Goryeong County, Andrea Virgilio, Mayor of Cremona, Emilia Gatto, Italian Ambassador to Korea, and about 10 representatives from both countries. They engaged in in-depth discussions on promoting cultural and artistic exchanges and tourism cooperation between the two cities, focusing on the Gayageum and the violin.
After the meeting, a dinner was held with officials involved in the "Stradivarius Violin Exhibition," which will take place at Deoksoogung Palace's Dondeokjeon from November 1 to 21. The event also served as an opportunity to highlight the historical significance and cultural potential of Goryeong County, which is designated as the capital of the ancient Gaya Kingdom.
Governor Lee Namcheol stated, "This meeting with Cremona City marks a cultural solidarity between UNESCO World Heritage cities and represents a new starting point for future-oriented exchanges. Goryeong County will continue to pursue ongoing exchanges so that we can further advance in the fields of culture and the arts, and achieve tangible results that our residents can truly experience."
