On October 29, President Trump made a state visit to Korea to attend the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit held in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. President Lee presented President Trump with the Grand Order of Mugunghwa and a model of the Cheonmachong gold crown. The Cheonmachong gold crown symbolizes a leader’s strong leadership and authority.
Foreign media outlets commented that the gift was "tailored to President Trump's tastes." After receiving the gold crown, President Trump expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I want to wear it right now." The British newspaper The Mirror, quoting a body language expert, reported, "President Trump appeared to be in a state of euphoria, as if imagining the future, after receiving the gold crown."
However, controversy has arisen as images of President Trump, who has been criticized in the U.S. for authoritarian rule, joyfully receiving a gold crown symbolizing monarchy have emerged. The Washington Post pointed out that "it has been just over two weeks since large-scale 'No Kings' protests were held across the United States" in response to the gifting of the crown. The 'No Kings' protests are demonstrations condemning President Trump's authoritarian style of governance. On October 18, about 7 million people participated in these protests in over 2,700 cities across the United States.
Meanwhile, the highest order President Trump received is known to contain 712.5 grams of gold (190 don), 412.5 grams of silver (110 don), as well as rubies, amethysts, and cloisonn?. With the recent surge in gold prices, the gold content alone is said to be worth over 130 million won as of October 29. The model gold crown contains 1,000 grams (266.6 don) of gold, which is estimated to be worth about 187 million won.
In return, President Trump presented President Lee with a set of baseball items stamped with his personal seal. On October 30, Kim Namjoon, spokesperson for the presidential office, explained, "The baseball bat bears the autograph of Dylan Crews of the Washington Nationals, and the baseball is stamped with President Trump's seal."
