Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Institute Hosts "Asian Radiation Dosimetry Group Annual Meeting"

Over 100 Experts from More Than 10 Countries Participate
Discussing Standardization of Radiation Dosimetry Technology
Through International Cooperation

The Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Institute (Director: Lee Changhoon) held the "2025 Asian Radiation Dosimetry Group (ARADOS) Annual Meeting" for four days from October 28 to 31, 2025, in the main auditorium on the second floor of the institute.

This meeting was jointly organized by the Korea Retrospective Dosimetry Network (KREDOS) and the Korean Internal Dosimetry Research Group (KIDRG) to strengthen international cooperation and technical standardization in the field of radiation dose assessment.

Approximately 100 researchers and experts from more than 10 countries, including those from Asia and Europe, attended to share the latest research findings and discuss avenues for collaboration.

The opening ceremony on the first day was hosted by Kang Youngrok, Head of the Department of Radiation Biomedical Research at the Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Institute. The official program began with a welcoming address by ARADOS President Dr. Osamu Kurihara and an opening speech by Director Lee Changhoon.

Director Lee stated, "Accurate and reliable dose assessment is essential not only for safety management in the medical, industrial, and nuclear power sectors, but also as a core element of the radiation emergency response system that protects people's lives and the environment." He added, "ARADOS has contributed to enhancing scientific credibility as a central hub for cooperation in the Asian region." He further expressed hope that "this meeting will serve as an opportunity to further strengthen academic and technical cooperation in the fields of radiation dose assessment and radiation protection."

During the opening ceremony, Lee Heeseok, President of the Korean Association for Radiation Protection, and Kim Daegi, Director of the RCA Regional Cooperation Office, delivered congratulatory remarks emphasizing the importance of international collaboration. In addition, Dr. Lee Jeongil of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (President of KREDOS) and Dr. Kim Jeongin of the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Radiation Health Institute (President of KIDRG) introduced their associations' activities and outlined future directions for cooperation.

In the keynote session, Dr. Osamu Kurihara from the National Institutes for Quantum Science and Technology (QST-NIRS) in Japan presented on "Reconstruction of Radiation Exposure Doses for Emergency Workers during the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant Accident." This was followed by a presentation from Dr. Kang Youngrok of the Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Institute, who introduced "Research Activities in Radiation Dosimetry" and shared domestic research trends.

From the second day, a total of four technical sessions were held, covering topics such as biological dosimetry, external and internal dosimetry, and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-based assessments.

Dr. Elizabeth Ainsbury from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) introduced the activities of the European Radiation Dosimetry Group, while research institutions from Japan, China, and Korea shared practical emergency response technologies, including the development of internal exposure assessment codes and calibration of iodine monitoring equipment.

Dr. Francois Trompier from the French Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) presented on EPR dose assessment technology using smartphone glass, and Dr. Kim Hyojin from the Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Institute introduced the current status of EPR research in Korea.

This year's annual meeting, with "Integrated Dose Assessment" as its central theme, served as an opportunity to strengthen radiation disaster response capabilities in Asia and solidify the international network.

The Southeast Regional Radiation Medicine Institute plans to use this meeting as a stepping stone to further expand its role as a global cooperation hub leading research in physical and biological dosimetry based on international standards.
