Responding to President Lee Jaemyung's Request
"South Korea-U.S. Military Alliance Strong"
South Korean Investment in the U.S. to Exceed $600 Billion
On the 30th, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had approved South Korea to build nuclear-powered submarines, stating that these submarines would be constructed at the Philadelphia Shipyard, which was acquired by Hanwha.
President Trump posted on his own social networking service, Truth Social, on this day, saying, "The South Korea-U.S. military alliance is stronger than ever," and, "I have approved South Korea to build nuclear-powered submarines instead of the outdated and less mobile diesel submarines it currently possesses." This is interpreted as a response to President Lee Jaemyung's request at the South Korea-U.S. summit the previous day, in which he asked Trump to make a decision to supply fuel for nuclear-powered submarines.
He stated that the submarine would be built at the Philadelphia Shipyard, and that the U.S. shipbuilding industry would achieve great success as a result. The Philadelphia Shipyard is a U.S. shipyard that was acquired by Hanwha Ocean in June of the previous year. President Trump also remarked during his special address at the 2025 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit the previous day that the Philadelphia Shipyard would become the most successful shipyard in the world.
Regarding the South Korea-U.S. trade agreement, President Trump said, "South Korea has agreed to pay the United States 350 billion dollars in exchange for reduced tariffs previously imposed by the U.S." However, he did not mention his previous statements about a "350 billion dollars up front" investment in the United States.
He also said that the scale of investment in the United States by South Korean companies and others would exceed 600 billion dollars. President Trump stated, "South Korea has agreed to make large-scale purchases of American oil and gas, and the amount that South Korea's wealthy companies and businesspeople will invest in the United States will exceed 600 billion dollars."
Regarding his scheduled meeting with President Xi Jinping later that morning, President Trump said, "I am very much looking forward to meeting President Xi Jinping," and announced that the U.S.-China summit would take place in a few hours.
