Gyeonggi Province Finds 461 Cases of Severe Corrosion and Cracks in Pedestrian Overpasses at 183 Sites

Severe corrosion and cracking have been identified in old pedestrian overpasses and cantilever-type pedestrian bridges in Gyeonggi Province.

On October 30, Gyeonggi Province announced that it had inspected the management status of 896 locations, including old and deteriorated pedestrian overpasses and cantilever-type pedestrian bridges that threaten pedestrian safety, and discovered 461 cases of neglect, such as corrosion and cracks, at 183 sites.

From August 4 to 29, Gyeonggi Province conducted both document and on-site audits of 495 pedestrian overpasses in the province registered as Type 3 facilities in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Facility Management System (FMS), 185 other facilities not designated as Type 3, totaling 680 sites, as well as 216 cantilever-type pedestrian bridges (expanded pedestrian bridges).

The cantilever-type pedestrian bridge is the same structural type as Jeongja Bridge, which collapsed in April 2023, resulting in casualties.

As a result of the inspection, Gyeonggi Province identified 424 issues at 164 pedestrian overpasses and 37 issues at 19 cantilever-type pedestrian bridges. The province requested that the relevant local governments and other managing authorities address these issues.

An Sangseop, Chairperson of the Gyeonggi Province Audit Committee, stated, "We will continue to prioritize the safety of residents by maximizing the positive functions of targeted audits, listening to, observing, empathizing with, and seeking improvements based on field conditions."

Meanwhile, for the first time in a targeted audit, Gyeonggi Province collaborated with Suwon, Goyang, Namyangju, Anyang, and Pyeongtaek to conduct joint audits, aiming to carry out more field-oriented inspections of facility maintenance and management.
