A Practical Leader Who Finds Answers Among the People
Choi Hunsik, Chairman of the Uiseong County Council, has been awarded the '2025 Local Autonomy Legislative Award' hosted by the Korea Central Voters Association.
The award ceremony was held on October 28 at the National Assembly Members’ Office Building in Yeouido, Seoul. Marking the 30th anniversary of the revival of local autonomy, this event recognized metropolitan and basic council members nationwide for their practical, citizen-centered legislative activities.
Chairman Choi, who leads the first half of the 9th Uiseong County Council, has advocated 'communication, fieldwork, and responsibility' as his legislative philosophy.
He personally visits towns and villages each month to listen to residents’ voices, reflecting their opinions in county administration and practicing a field-oriented approach that prioritizes substance over formality.
In particular, his efforts in advancing policies for the future of the region and expanding civic participation were highly praised, including: ▲ plans for urban development linked to the new Uiseong airport ▲ establishment of the Bio Valley industrial belt ▲ laying the groundwork for attracting young people and returnees ▲ and the implementation of a cultural city project aimed at increasing the daily population.
Chairman Choi stated, "The core of legislative work must always be the residents," and added, "I have done my best to listen directly to the people and collaborate with the administration to bring about real change." He further credited the achievement to the collective efforts of residents, fellow council members, and public officials.
The Korea Central Voters Association commented, "Chairman Choi is a local council member who goes beyond formal activities to address issues on the ground and build public trust," and described him as "an exemplary case of participatory and responsible politics."
Since Chairman Choi took office, the Uiseong County Council has strengthened its focus on communication and participation, driving tangible changes in regional balanced development, welfare, youth policy, and other key areas.
Chairman Choi is known as a 'practical leader' who connects with residents through actions rather than words. His legislative approach, which seeks answers in the field and finds pathways among the people, is regarded as the essence of local politics. Over the past 30 years of local autonomy, the trajectory of change led by the Uiseong County Council is presenting a new direction for grassroots democracy.
