August Marriages Reach 19,449, Highest in Eight Years

National Data Agency Releases August Population Trends
Number of Births Reaches 20,867, Up 3.8%

The number of marriages has continued to increase since April of last year, surpassing 19,000 in August and reaching the highest level in eight years.

According to the "Population Trends for August 2025" released by the National Data Office on October 29, the number of marriages in August was 19,449, an increase of 1,922 cases (11.0%). This is the largest figure for August since 2017, when there were 20,068 marriages, marking an eight-year high.


The number of marriages has been rising for 17 consecutive months since April of last year. An official from the Data Office explained, "In our country, 95% of births occur within marriage," adding, "An increase in marriages is a positive sign for a rise in births."


The number of births in August was 20,867, up by 764 (3.8%) compared to the same month last year. The number of births has increased for 14 consecutive months since July of last year.


The total fertility rate (the average number of children a woman is expected to have in her lifetime) was 0.77, up by 0.02. While the rate had recently risen to the 0.7 range and saw a notable increase last month (0.80), it adjusted again this month.

The number of deaths was 28,971, a decrease of 3,150 (9.8%). The decline in deaths was observed in all provinces and metropolitan cities nationwide.


The natural decrease, calculated by subtracting the number of deaths from the number of births, was 8,105. Following May, when the figure was -8,202, the natural decrease has once again widened to the 8,000 range.


The number of divorces was 7,196, a decrease of 420 (5.5%).
