Observe the Largest Full Moon of the Year on November 5
Telescope Experience, Wish Tree, and Full Moon Bread for Participants
The National Gwacheon Science Museum has announced that it will hold a "Supermoon Special Observation Event" on November 5, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM.
This full moon will pass through its closest point to Earth, known as perigee, and is expected to be the largest and brightest moon visible since 2019, marking the first time in six years that such a phenomenon will occur.
According to the museum, this full moon will appear about 14% larger and brighter than the smallest full moon observed on April 13. This is due to the phenomenon where the apparent size of the moon increases as the distance between the Earth and the moon decreases. As the event coincides with the period leading up to the college entrance exam, it is expected to be a meaningful occasion where participants can make wishes under the "largest moon."
The special observation event will feature a variety of moon-themed programs, including supermoon telescope observation, wish letter writing, moon and astronomy space craft activities, and screenings of astronomy videos at the planetarium. Participants will have the opportunity to observe the largest full moon of the year through the observatory's high-performance telescopes and can also take photos of the supermoon with their mobile phones using outdoor practice telescopes.
Additionally, there will be hands-on booths such as "Moon Craft" and "Wish Letter Tree Decoration," and the planetarium will screen science videos about the moon, offering a comprehensive program that combines education and hands-on experience.
Director Han Hyungjoo stated, "I hope this Supermoon Special Observation Event will be a meaningful time to wrap up the year and prepare for 2026, and I wish for all participants' dreams to come true under the moonlight."
The planetarium program (20-minute lecture and 20-minute video) requires advance paid reservation (1,000 KRW), while all other programs are available for free on-site participation. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 9:00 AM on October 29 through the National Gwacheon Science Museum website. On the day of the event, the first 300 participants will receive a "Full Moon Bread," and anyone aged 7 or older can participate (children aged 7 to 13 must be accompanied by a guardian).
