Seo-gu District in Gwangju will host the 3rd Yangdongtongmaek Festival for three days from October 30 to November 1, centered around Yangdong Traditional Market’s Old No. 6 Road and the Taepyeonggyo area.

According to Seo-gu District on October 28, this year’s festival, themed “Yangdongtongmaek: You and I Are Connected,” is designed as a culinary cultural event where the traditional market and citizens can interact, and different generations can come together.

The festival will run daily from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The opening ceremony will take place at 5 p.m. on October 30, starting with a performance by a local arts team, followed by a unity performance featuring seven markets within the traditional market.

During the festival, part of the market, including Old No. 6 Road, will be transformed into an “Eating Zone.” In this area, around 250 dining tables will be set up, and visitors can enjoy over 60 signature market foods-such as whole fried chicken, chicken skewers, sweet and spicy fried chicken, chicken and makgeolli, dried seafood, and tteokbokki-paired with beer.

The district will operate “no overcharging booths” and plans to establish a virtuous cycle system by sourcing ingredients from within the market, aiming to revitalize the marketplace.

The Yangdongtongmaek Festival will also feature a diverse lineup of performances. On the main stage, there will be the “Cheers Stage” with local bands and artists, “Dance in the Market,” “Yangdong EDM,” and performances by merchant clubs.

On the final day of the festival, visitor participation will take center stage. The main stage will host a “Paper Airplane Throwback Contest” and the “Hey, You Too? Me Too! Yangdong Open Singing Contest,” while a random play dance event will take place at the dried seafood market intersection, adding to the excitement for visitors.

Other activities include “Sharing Memories,” a surprise market goods auction, hands-on programs such as rice cake decorating and aquarium candle making, and mini busking performances inside the market, offering a wide range of entertainment for attendees.

This festival is hosted by Seo-gu District and organized by the Yangdong Traditional Market Revitalization Council, with support and sponsorship from the Gwangju Seo-gu District Council, Small Enterprise and Market Service, KORAIL, Gwangju Tourism Organization, Sunhan Hospital, Cass, and Bohae Brewery.

The Yangdong Traditional Market Revitalization Council, which oversees the festival, stated, “This event is especially meaningful as it is the first festival planned and carried out voluntarily by merchants after the completion of the commercial district revitalization project. We hope citizens will create special memories through a variety of programs that showcase the flavors and warmth of the traditional market.”
