Yeongju and Bonghwa Begin Joint Bid to Host 2027 Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival

Yeongju City and Bonghwa County in North Gyeongsang Province have taken their first step toward jointly hosting the 65th Gyeongbuk Provincial Sports Festival in 2027.

On October 27, Yeongju City held an appointment ceremony for the Yeongju-Bonghwa Provincial Sports Festival Joint Hosting Promotion Committee in the permanent conference room at Yeongju Citizens’ Stadium, officially launching efforts to jointly secure the event.


The event was attended by Yoo Jeonggeun, Acting Mayor of Yeongju, Park Hyunkook, Mayor of Bonghwa County, and 24 committee members from both local governments. The committee, co-chaired by Kim Kyungjun, President of the Yeongju Sports Council, and Park Jonghwa, President of the Bonghwa Sports Council, consists of a total of 22 members. It will be responsible for establishing hosting strategies and strengthening cooperation systems.


The meeting focused on the necessity and expected benefits of hosting the provincial sports festival, plans for infrastructure development, and strategies to increase citizen participation.


The two regions presented the vision of “United Yeongju and Bonghwa, Opening the Future of North Gyeongsang Together,” expressing their ambition to use the provincial sports festival as a driving force for regional development.


Yoo Jeonggeun, Acting Mayor of Yeongju, stated, “I am confident that if Yeongju and Bonghwa join forces, it won’t be long before we become the main hosts of the provincial sports festival,” adding, “I hope all committee members will do their utmost, united in purpose, to ensure the successful bid.”


Park Hyunkook, Mayor of Bonghwa County, emphasized, “Securing the provincial sports festival will serve as an opportunity to revitalize the local economy and promote unity among residents. By preparing together, our two regions will surely achieve excellent results.”


Going forward, Yeongju and Bonghwa plan to accelerate efforts to build a practical foundation for hosting the event, including promotional activities and shaping public opinion.
