Completion Scheduled for Late 2027
Set to Open in the First Half of 2028
The Hyundai Gwangju, the first large-scale mixed-use shopping mall in Gwangju, will break ground on November 20.
According to Gwangju City on October 26, The Hyundai Gwangju (Hyundai Department Store) corporation, following its groundbreaking briefing in July, will soon finalize its construction contractor and begin construction next month. The Hyundai Gwangju aims for completion by the end of 2027 and plans to open in the first half of 2028.
This development project, located on the former Jeonbang and Ilshin Spinning sites, will have a total floor area of 272,955 square meters and a retail area of 100,890 square meters. The building will span six underground and eight above-ground floors, making it about 1.4 times larger than The Hyundai Seoul in Yeouido, Seoul. It is planned as a complex cultural space combining shopping, culture, and entertainment functions.
During the approximately 30-month construction period, up to 3,000 construction jobs are expected to be created per day, and after opening, the mall is anticipated to generate direct and indirect employment for around 5,000 people. Gwangju City is also preparing measures for cooperation with local businesses through the Mixed-Use Shopping Mall Coexistence Development Council.
A city official stated, "We will develop Gwangju into a global shopping and cultural hub by attracting tourists not only from Gwangju and Jeonnam, but also from China, Southeast Asia, and other countries, ushering in an era where 30 million people use the city annually."
