100,000 Bottles of 500ml and 3,000 Bottles of 2L Bottled Water Purchased in Emergency
"We Will Use Bottled Water for Both Cooking and Drinking"
An emergency situation has arisen for the Gimcheon Gimbap Festival, scheduled to begin in one day, after substances suspected to be chironomid larvae were found in the tap water of Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province.
According to Gimcheon City on October 24, substances suspected to be chironomid larvae were discovered in samples collected from the Hwanggeum Reservoir on October 22. The Gyeongbuk Institute of Health and Environment, which analyzed the samples, notified Gimcheon City that the substances appeared to be chironomid larvae.
As a result, on October 23, Gimcheon City inspected the Hwanggeum Reservoir and three local water distribution stations, discovering additional substances suspected to be chironomid larvae. Officials from the Environmental Agency and the Nakdong River Water Supply Support Center are currently conducting an epidemiological investigation to determine the route of larval contamination at the Hwanggeum Reservoir and the water distribution stations within Gimcheon City.
A Gimcheon City official stated, "The substances found in the samples are currently suspected to be chironomid larvae, and we have requested an analysis from the National Institute of Biological Resources." The official added, "If the substances are confirmed to be chironomid larvae, we plan to issue recommendations such as suspending direct consumption of tap water."
Due to this situation, the water supply for the Gimcheon Gimbap Festival, set to open in one day, is also on high alert. Although tap water was originally planned for cooking, the discovery of suspected chironomid larvae has led organizers to switch to bottled water for food preparation.
Gimcheon City has arranged for ten 16-ton trucks to urgently purchase 100,000 bottles of 500ml bottled water and 3,000 bottles of 2-liter bottled water from the market as a reserve supply, which will be distributed to booths at the Gimbap Festival venue. The city has also decided to purchase and distribute an additional quantity of bottled water of the same amount.
An official explained, "Even if chironomid larvae are confirmed, boiled tap water poses no harm to human health. However, to ensure the safety of festival visitors, both drinking and cooking water will be supplied as bottled water."
