"DNA Collected from Fibers Using Wet Vacuum Principle"... Grand Prize at Science-Based Policing Idea Contest

This year's grand prize was awarded to Sergeant Kim Myungjin of the Forensic Science Division at the Busan Metropolitan Police Agency. He invented a "multi-DNA filtration and collection device" that utilizes the principle of a wet vacuum cleaner, enabling DNA collection from fibers where it is difficult to use a cotton swab.

The top police division award went to Inspector Kim Hanbyul of the Police Policy Research Institute, who proposed an "AI-based advanced bloodstain pattern analysis solution." The top public division award was given to Yoon Jingyu of Hongik University, who proposed an "AI-based risk prediction and response system for elderly dementia patients." In total, four individuals received top honors.

This year's contest was held over a 40-day period from June 11 to July 20, and a total of 271 ideas were submitted, including 143 entries in the police division and 128 in the general division.

The grand prize winner receives the Prime Minister's Award and a cash prize of 5 million won. The top prize includes the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Award and a cash prize of 3.5 million won. The excellence award is accompanied by the National Police Agency Commissioner’s Award, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) President’s Award, and a cash prize of 1.2 million won.

Do Junsu, Director General of the Future Policing Policy Bureau at the National Police Agency, stated, "This contest provided a valuable opportunity for frontline police officers and the public to recognize and jointly address policing issues they experience firsthand. We will strive to utilize the award-winning and other outstanding ideas through research and development to help solve real-world challenges in the field."
