Drink Plenty of Water for Safe Alcohol Consumption
Never Mix Alcohol with Sleeping Pills or Other Medications
Singer Soyou has become embroiled in controversy after boarding a plane following alcohol consumption, sparking a debate about appropriate alcohol intake on flights. Previously, Soyou stated, "I boarded a U.S. airline and requested a Korean-speaking crew member, but my request was not accommodated, and I experienced an unpleasant incident." However, reports later surfaced online claiming that "Soyou was heavily intoxicated." Some argued that the incident occurred simply because Soyou boarded the plane while intoxicated, and that there was no racial discrimination involved. Soyou refuted these claims. Through her social media, she emphasized, "Before boarding, I had a small amount of alcohol served with a meal at the lounge," and added, "There were no issues or restrictions during the boarding process."
This has also increased interest in the 'appropriate alcohol consumption guidelines' that should be followed for safe air travel. The cabin pressure and oxygen levels on an aircraft are lower than on the ground. As a result, consuming alcohol causes blood alcohol concentration to rise more quickly than usual. This means that even a much smaller amount of alcohol than one's usual tolerance can lead to intoxication, as well as symptoms such as headaches and dizziness.
According to the Aerospace Medical Association and the safety manuals of various airlines, the safest approach during long-haul flights is to avoid consuming alcohol. However, if drinking is unavoidable, men are advised to limit themselves to one glass of wine (150 mL) or one can of beer (330 mL), while women are advised to consume no more than half to one glass of wine. Above all, it is important to note that the appropriate amount of alcohol can vary depending on individual constitution, tolerance, and fatigue level on the day of the flight.

When drinking alcohol before or after boarding a plane, it is essential to drink plenty of water. If the body is dehydrated, the absorption rate of alcohol increases, leading to a higher blood alcohol concentration. Drinking alcohol without water can cause intoxication more quickly and may also overload the liver, which is responsible for breaking down alcohol. In addition, it is advisable to avoid alcoholic beverages or cocktails containing carbonation, as carbonation accelerates absorption and intensifies the effects of intoxication. If taking sleeping pills during a flight to aid sleep, alcohol should never be consumed together. Combining alcohol with sleeping pills, antidepressants, or similar medications can cause oxygen saturation to drop rapidly, significantly increasing the risk of dangerous situations.
