On October 21, Yeonggwang County in South Jeolla Province held a "First Anniversary Press Conference" in the main conference room of the county office, attended by over 100 people, including members of the press, the deputy county mayor, and heads of departments and offices, marking the first anniversary of County Mayor Jang Seil's inauguration. The event served to share the achievements of county administration over the past year and the future direction of county governance.
On this day, County Mayor Jang Seil presented the main achievements in key areas under the theme "Overcoming Crisis, Seeing Hope," including the local economy, resident welfare, agriculture, fisheries and rural communities, culture and tourism, and participatory administration.
Starting with a feasibility review of pledges in October 2024, Yeonggwang County institutionalized its pledge implementation system by establishing an action plan for pledge fulfillment in November 2024 and finalizing 50 pledges in December 2024.
In particular, the operation of a situation board in the mayor's office and the introduction of a citizen jury system to regularly verify the progress of pledge implementation have been evaluated as significant achievements in enhancing the credibility of the pledges by establishing a responsible administration system.
Mayor Jang stated, "The greatest duty of a county mayor is to protect and care for the lives of the residents," adding, "The past year has been a time of preparing new hope for Yeonggwang by overcoming crises."
During the press conference, sharp questions were raised about the progress and challenges of Yeonggwang County’s current key projects.
In particular, regarding the much-anticipated selection results for the government's "Basic Income Pilot Project for Rural and Fishing Villages," he said, "While there is some disappointment, we will continue to respond to additional requests from the National Assembly and future calls for proposals until the end," emphasizing, "We will foster renewable energy as a core strategic industry and ensure that Yeonggwang becomes a model for a sustainable basic income city unique to our county."
He went on to say, "There were also trial and error and shortcomings over the past year," and pledged, "I will continue to communicate with residents with greater humility and further enhance the completeness of county administration."
