Yongin City Takes Proactive Measures Against Heavy Snow and Freezing This Winter

"Snow Removal Measures Period" Begins November 15
Securing Equipment and Vehicles... Strengthening IoT-Based Snow Removal System

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province announced on October 20 that it will designate the period from November 15 of this year to March 15 of next year as the "Snow Removal Measures Period" and implement comprehensive measures to prepare for heavy snowfall during the winter season.

The city explained that it will proactively respond and establish a rapid, field-oriented snow removal system to prevent traffic disruptions and safety accidents caused by heavy snow and freezing.

The city has replaced 44 outdated snow removal machines and added 6 additional snow removal vehicles, securing a total of 515 pieces of snow removal equipment. It also plans to stockpile snow removal materials in advance, including 19,360 tons of eco-friendly de-icing agents, 3,180 tons of liquid de-icing agents, 600 cubic meters of sand, and 1,047 snow removal containers, which is approximately 90% of the amount used last year.

To address key mountain passes and areas vulnerable to freezing, the city will operate 127 automatic brine spraying devices and 9 road heating systems. In addition, it will newly install fixed brine spraying devices at 5 locations, including Provincial Road 321 and major school routes. All devices are remotely controlled, allowing for immediate activation when snowfall is forecasted.

The city will also conduct preemptive snow removal work from the exits of 11 bus garages, where significant inconvenience was experienced during last year’s heavy snow, to the start of bus routes. Snow removal containers will be placed at 83 entrances to apartment complexes and 190 school routes, so that any citizen can use them. In township and rural areas, 88 snowplow blades for agricultural machinery will be provided to expand voluntary, village-level snow removal activities.

The city will further strengthen its smart snow removal system based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology. Smart sensors and cameras will be installed on 87 snow removal vehicles, enabling real-time monitoring of vehicle locations and road conditions for swift and accurate snow removal responses.

Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin City, stated, "We will prioritize the safety of citizens and the smooth flow of traffic by establishing a proactive response system," and added, "I urge all citizens to actively participate in the campaign to clear snow in front of their homes and shops."
