According to local media outlets such as CBS News on October 16 (local time), Tae-mi Kavi, a resident of Wyandotte, Michigan, won the second prize-just below the jackpot-in the Powerball lottery held in September. She matched four out of five numbers plus the Powerball number, earning a prize of $100,000 (approximately 140 million Korean won).

What makes her story particularly interesting is that she selected her lottery numbers with the help of ChatGPT. When the Powerball jackpot exceeded $1 billion, Kavi decided to buy a ticket and asked ChatGPT for number recommendations, purchasing an online ticket with the suggested numbers. The result was astonishing. Upon discovering her win, she said, "As soon as I saw that four numbers and the Powerball matched, I had a feeling."

The prize, initially expected to be $50,000, doubled because she opted for the "Power Play" feature. Power Play is an option that, for an additional $1, multiplies the winnings by a predetermined factor.

A similar incident occurred in Virginia. Carrie Edwards purchased a lottery ticket using numbers recommended by ChatGPT and won $150,000 (about 190 million Korean won). She described the win as "an unexpected blessing" and expressed her intention to donate to three organizations: a group researching her ex-husband's illness, a local food justice organization, and a military welfare group supported by her father.

However, experts draw a clear line regarding whether these cases are due to AI's predictive abilities. Domestic AI experts explained, "The lottery is a completely random drawing system with no patterns, so even artificial intelligence cannot predict the numbers." In fact, both the U.S. Powerball and Korea's Lotto are designed so that every number has the same probability of being drawn, meaning AI recommendations are ultimately no different from numbers chosen at random by humans.
