Hwang Jeonga: "Number of KT Hacking Victims Increases by 2,000... Illegal Base Stations Rise from 4 to 20"

The scale of the unauthorized micro-payment incident involving KT has been found to be larger than initially reported. The number of illegal base station IDs increased from four to twenty, and it was confirmed that approximately 22,000 people connected to these illegal base stations.

According to Hwang Jeonga, a member of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, as of October 16, the number of illegal base station IDs at KT has been identified as twenty, up from the previous four. The number of people who connected to the illegal base stations also increased by about 2,000, from the previously reported 20,030 to around 22,000.

Additional victims of unauthorized micro-payments have been identified, raising the number above the previously reported figure of fewer than ten. Considering that sensitive information such as the victims’ mobile phone numbers, International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), and International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) has already been leaked, there are concerns that the personal information of the newly identified 2,000 individuals may also have been exposed.

However, it remains unclear whether KT has notified these individuals about their connection to the illegal base stations or reported the additional cases to the Personal Information Protection Commission. As of now, KT has counted 362 victims, while the police have identified 220 victims as of October 13.

Hwang Jeonga previously raised suspicions that the actual scale of the damage could be even greater, as the figure announced by KT does not include victims identified by the police.

Hwang Jeonga criticized KT, stating, "KT’s lies, aimed at downplaying the situation by claiming there were no additional victims, have finally been exposed," and added, "Punitive measures must be imposed for KT’s repeated and malicious attempts to minimize and conceal the situation."
