Despite Ruling Party's Pressure, Independence Hall Director Says "No Intention to Resign"

Parliamentary Audit of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs by the Political Affairs Committee

Kim Hyungseok, director of the Independence Hall, stated on October 16 that he has "no intention of resigning" in response to the Democratic Party of Korea's concentrated calls for his resignation.

Director Kim made this statement during a parliamentary audit of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs by the National Assembly's Political Affairs Committee, held at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, earlier that morning. This was in response to a related question from Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Hyunjung. Director Kim had previously sparked controversy with remarks such as "Liberation was a gift from the Allied Powers," and the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is currently conducting a special audit regarding him.

During the audit, Director Kim faced continued criticism over various controversies and allegations. Kim Yongman, a Democratic Party lawmaker and great-grandson of Kim Koo, stated, "When the director says that during the Japanese occupation, our nation's government was Japan, and that liberation was a gift from the Allied Powers, it undermines the historical identity of the Independence Hall," adding, "All the efforts of the Independence Hall's staff are being rendered meaningless."

Lee Jeongmoon, a Democratic Party lawmaker, pointed out that Director Kim allowed the ROTC alumni association and religious groups to use Independence Hall facilities at his own discretion, calling it "a clear case of favoritism and a breach of duty." In addition, lawmaker Kim Hyunjung raised suspicions about Director Kim's alleged negligence in his work.

Director Kim emphasized, "I am striving to ensure that the public can take pride and establish a proper national perspective," and added, "Going forward, I and all members will fulfill our responsibilities and duties as an institution that upholds the spirit of independence and contributes to national unity."
