Expected to Coordinate President Xi's Visit to Korea During the APEC Summit
Noh Jaeheon, Chairman of the East Asia Culture Center, has been officially appointed as the first Ambassador to China under the Lee Jaemyung administration. Ambassador Noh is the eldest son of former President Roh Tae-woo, who led the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and China in 1992.
On October 16, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the appointment of Ambassador Noh to the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in China. With this appointment, the ambassadorial vacancy that had lasted for nine months since the departure of former Ambassador Chung Jaeho in January has been filled. Previously, on October 14, President Lee Jaemyung convened a Cabinet meeting and approved the government personnel appointment to designate Noh as the new Ambassador to China.
Ambassador Noh, the eldest son of former President Roh, graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Business Administration, earned a master’s degree in Political Science from Stanford University in the United States, and a Juris Doctor from Georgetown University in the United States. He has also served as a researcher at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in the United States, a visiting researcher at the University of Tokyo, an advisor to the International Advisory Council of Chengdu, China, and as President of the Korea-Hungary Friendship Association.
Some interpret Ambassador Noh’s appointment as being influenced by the connection between his father, former President Roh, and China. South Korea and China officially established diplomatic relations in 1992 during the presidency of Roh, who led the "Northern Policy." Ambassador Noh himself has consistently been involved in related activities, serving as Chair of the Socio-Cultural Subcommittee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Committee for the Future Development of Korea-China Relations, among other roles. Notably, after President Lee Jaemyung’s inauguration, Ambassador Noh visited China as a special envoy and delivered a personal letter from the President to Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Ambassador Noh, who will soon take up his post in China, is expected to coordinate the format and schedule of President Xi’s visit to Korea, which is anticipated to take place around the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Gyeongju at the end of this month.
