KMI and KIOST Hold 'Sea AI Forum'... Discuss Building a Collaborative AI Ecosystem in Maritime and Fisheries

Over 100 Stakeholders from Industry, Academia, and Research
"Need for Generative AI-Based Technology Development and Talent Cultivation in Maritime and Fisheries"

Korea Maritime Institute (KMI, President Cho Jeonghee) and Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Lee Heeseung) concluded the '2025 Sea AI Forum' at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center (BPEX) on October 14, 2025.

The forum was attended by over 100 stakeholders from industry, academia, and research institutions, aiming to establish a practical collaboration framework and implementation strategies among organizations that possess and utilize maritime and fisheries data.


The event began with opening and welcoming remarks from the heads of both institutions, followed by a series of presentations on diverse topics, including: collaboration between humans and AI; R&D strategies for developing generative AI-based technologies in the maritime and fisheries industries; development and application cases of AI technologies in the fisheries sector; prospects for shipbuilding and marine AI agent technologies; and case studies on the development and utilization of maritime traffic AI technologies.


Jeon Hyeongmo, Head of the Marine & Fisheries AI Transition Support Group at Korea Maritime Institute, delivered a presentation on 'KMI Research Support and Prototype Development Cases.' He introduced the current status of building AI research infrastructure in the maritime and fisheries sector and showcased generative AI initiatives leading blue economy innovation through demonstration projects.


In the subsequent panel discussion, five panelists explored strategies for establishing a collaborative AI ecosystem in the maritime and fisheries sector. The panel emphasized the need for: developing domain-specific AI models; training practical AI talent; building vertical data centers and GPU infrastructure; and improving public data accessibility and relaxing regulations.


Cho Jeonghee, President of Korea Maritime Institute, stated, "Through outstanding case studies and discussions, we reaffirmed the importance of developing AI technologies tailored to the characteristics of the maritime and fisheries sector, as well as the necessity of nurturing talent and building infrastructure to support these efforts." She added, "With KMI and KIOST at the center, we will work closely with related organizations to achieve tangible results based on the strategies discussed today."
