Possibility of Additional On-site Inspection at the Supreme Court Raised by Judiciary Committee Members

On October 15, at the Supreme Court building in Seocho-gu, Seoul, Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae expressed his position during the closing remarks of the on-site National Assembly inspection by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, stating, "With humility, I will fulfill my fundamental mission."

In accordance with customary practice, Chief Justice Cho attended only at the beginning and end of the inspection to deliver his greetings. He said, "I thank the committee members for carrying out the inspection late into the night over the past two days," adding, "I listened to the members' remarks with seriousness and gravity."

He continued, "For any matters that were not resolved during the inspection but can be answered, I will follow up and provide responses through the Chief Judge of the National Court Administration."

Chief Justice Cho emphasized, "The members of the judiciary will carefully consider the expectations and demands of the public and work to improve any shortcomings. We will approach the remaining inspections and comprehensive reviews of courts at all levels with sincerity and diligence."

On this day, members of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea and non-negotiating groups, excluding the People Power Party, criticized the Supreme Court for its decision to remand President Lee Jaemyung's violation of the Public Official Election Act case ahead of the last presidential election, labeling it as an "attempt to intervene in the presidential election."

Assemblyman Park Ji-won of the Democratic Party and others stated, "Although there will be a comprehensive review, we should schedule an additional day for an on-site inspection."

The on-site inspection of the Supreme Court concluded with additional remarks from the committee members and closing comments from Chu Mi-ae, Chairperson of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and member of the Democratic Party.
