Investigation Planning Office Among Targets
Odongwoon, the Chief of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, is responding to questions regarding President Yoon Seokyeol's decision to cancel detention at the plenary meeting of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee held at the National Assembly on March 12.
The special prosecutor's team, led by Lee Myunghyun and investigating the death of a Marine, has launched a compulsory investigation into Odongwoon, the Chief of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.
On the morning of the 15th, the special prosecutor's team booked Chief Odongwoon on charges of dereliction of duty and dispatched investigators to the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials to secure related materials. Deputy Chief Prosecutor Lee Jaeseung and the lead prosecutor were also booked. The Investigation Planning Office, Operations Support Office, and Case Management Office of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials were subject to the search and seizure.
Special Prosecutor Jeong Minyoung stated at a regular briefing, "We have booked the lead prosecutor in charge, the chief, and the deputy chief of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials on charges of dereliction of duty regarding the handling of the case after it was received by the office and before it was transferred to the special prosecutor. This is an additional search and seizure related to newly identified suspicions of dereliction of duty."
The special prosecutor's team is examining the circumstances behind the prolonged delay and lack of substantial progress in the investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, which began its probe into the Chae Sangbyeong case in August 2023 and has not produced significant results for over a year and a half.
