Twelve Lawmakers Including Kang Deukgu
Co-host Forum on 'Carbon Neutral Campuses'
The National Assembly will hold the 'Carbon Neutral Campus Creation Strategy Forum' at 1:00 p.m. on October 16 in the Second Small Conference Room of the National Assembly Members' Office Building.
This forum is co-hosted by 12 members of the National Assembly: Kang Deukgu, Kim Sungwon, Kim Kyohung, Jung Hyekyung, Kim Sohui, Jin Sunmi, Kang Kyungsook, Park Jihye, Yeom Taeyoung, Lee Soyoung, Lee Jaegang, and Jung Eulho. It is organized by the Korea Sustainable Campus Association and the Korea Climate and Environment Network.
The event aims to realize social value and enhance the international competitiveness of universities by exploring strategies for establishing carbon neutral campuses in response to climate change. The forum will focus on transparently disclosing universities' social responsibility activities and presenting eco-friendly, ethical, and inclusive operational models.
In addition, the forum will discuss research on university sustainability report indicators in connection with the government's carbon neutrality policies, the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and ESG management. It will also address ways to build a public-private-academic cooperation system to strengthen region-specific climate response capabilities.
Approximately 150 participants are expected to attend, including Yoon Seungyong, Senior Vice President of the Korean Council for University Education (President of Namseoul University); Jung Heeseok, Vice President of the Korea Sustainable Campus Association (President of Sungkyul University); Jang Giwon, Vice President of the Korea Sustainable Campus Association (President of Jungwon University); as well as officials from the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Education, experts in environment and sustainable development, and university students.
The program is divided into two main parts. The first part will feature five presentations, including a case study on Korea University's university sustainability report and an analysis of sustainability indicator guidelines by the Korean Society for Sustainable Development. The second part will be a comprehensive discussion chaired by Professor Hong Jongho of the Graduate School of Environmental Studies at Seoul National University, with participation from officials of the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment, association executives, and student representatives for an in-depth discussion.
Kang Sungjong, President of the Korea Sustainable Campus Association (President of Shinhan University), emphasized, "This forum will serve as a meaningful opportunity to concretely explore directions for universities' carbon neutrality strategies and the establishment of sustainability indicators, and to propose practical measures that contribute to achieving the national greenhouse gas reduction targets."
