Yeosu City in South Jeolla Province announced on October 13 that it has renamed the "Yeosun 10·19 Incident Promotion Center" to the "Yeosun 10·19 Incident History Museum" in order to commemorate the painful history of the Yeosun 10·19 Incident and transform it into a historical space where citizens and visitors can learn together.
The name change goes beyond simply informing the public about history. It aims to more authentically reflect the historical significance of the Yeosun Incident and to strengthen the justification for attracting the Yeosun Incident Peace Foundation and Peace Park. The decision was pursued based on citizens' opinions and finalized after expert consultation.
The term "History Museum" signifies an intention to properly convey the sacrifices and lessons of the Yeosun 10·19 Incident, while reinforcing the museum's identity as a space that reaffirms the values of peace and human rights.
Since its opening on June 18, the Yeosun 10·19 Incident History Museum has welcomed more than 2,500 visitors, including bereaved families, citizens, and students. Amid growing national attention, such as the enactment of the special law on the Yeosun Incident and the extension of fact-finding investigations, the museum is establishing itself as a historical space for citizens and bereaved families to remember together.
A city official stated, "This name change reflects both the historical value of the Yeosun 10·19 Incident and the consensus of our citizens," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that the museum expands as a space that transforms past pain into present peace and future human rights."
