Samcheok City in Gangwon Province and the Samcheok Tourism and Culture Foundation have remodeled the Trick Art Museum in Ssakdo Village, Dogye-eup, and newly established the "Small Art Museum END." As its inaugural exhibition, "Entrance: Curtain of Memory" will be on display until October 31.
This exhibition reinterprets the memories of Dogye's coal industry, which symbolized the era of industrialization, through art. It aims to portray disappearing spaces and the stories of people in the region through contemporary art.
Under the subtitle "The Time That Was Buried Hangs on Today," the exhibition connects Dogye's history and sentiments with visual art, inviting visitors to reflect on the region's identity.
The exhibition consists of three sections. First, the mobile exhibition project "Pavilion Art Dome" is designed to allow visitors to explore the boundaries between art and everyday life within an interactive space. Next, artist Lee Bonguk's painting exhibition, "Becoming a Migrant Who Cannot Migrate," contemplates the meanings of identity and movement through works that address the boundaries between local and outside, center and periphery. In addition, the media video performance "Makjang Gut" by artists Yang Haein and Yoo Hansol sensually captures the memories of Dogye's coal mines and the narratives of its community, enhancing visitors' immersion.
A foundation representative stated, "Small Art Museum END embodies both the meanings of 'END' and 'AND.' We hope that Dogye's coal industry heritage will be reborn as art and that this space will become a new cultural venue connecting the local community and its people."
Meanwhile, Small Art Museum END was established after being selected for the "Small Art Museum Creation and Operation Support Project," hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and organized by the Arts Council Korea. Special exhibitions on different themes will be held every month until December. In November, an "Illustration Exhibition of Dogye Coal Mine Stories" is planned, and in December, a "Communication Exhibition" involving both artists and citizens will take place.
The exhibition is held at Small Art Museum END, located at 41 Dogye-ro, Dogye-eup, Samcheok City, and is open to the public free of charge.
