Yeongdeungpo District in Seoul (District Mayor Choi Hokwon) will operate the “Yeongdeungpo Outdoor Library: Harmless Reading” at Yeouido Jamae Neighborhood Park from October 15 to 19, between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., allowing citizens to freely enjoy books during the autumn reading season.

“Harmless Reading” is a concept inspired by this year’s trend keyword, “Harmless Power,” and refers to taking a break from social stimulation and competition to find comfort and relaxation through books. The district’s goal with this event is to promote a “warm reading culture” that emphasizes comfort over stimulation.

The outdoor library will be divided into three themed zones: the “Reading Zone,” a free space decorated with bean bags and camping accessories; the “Book Playground Zone,” focused on children’s experiences; and the “Book Road Zone,” featuring participatory programs for all generations.

In the “Reading Zone,” a variety of programs will be held, including a reading session with theater actors Kim Minseok and Shin Jaebeom, librarian-curated book selections, and live performances. Visitors can also freely enjoy reading by borrowing a “Pop-up Book Kit,” which includes blankets, chairs, and books.

The district plans to use this event as an opportunity to present a new public cultural model that combines books, relaxation, and experiences, and to foster a reading culture that extends beyond libraries into everyday life.

Meanwhile, from October 24 to 26, the “10th Yeongdeungpo Book Festival” will be held at Seonyudo Park. This year’s festival will be held in conjunction with the “Seonyudo Garden Festival,” offering citizens a special opportunity to enjoy books in the autumn breeze.

Choi Hokwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, stated, “We will work to create a harmless reading environment where books and people can breathe together, so that everyone can enjoy the leisure of reading in daily life,” and encouraged many citizens to participate and show their interest.
