Proposal Submitted to the Provincial Superintendent
The city of Icheon in Gyeonggi Province announced on October 10 that it had proposed to Lim Taehee, Superintendent of the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, that 30% of the freshmen at the Icheon Science High School, scheduled to open in 2030, be allocated to local students.
The city explained that if freshmen are recruited only on a metropolitan-wide basis under the current system, there are limitations in guaranteeing local students' opportunities for admission and achieving balanced regional development. Therefore, the city insists that a local talent admission track should be introduced when selecting new students.
Through this measure, the city aims to prevent the outflow of talented individuals and strengthen educational competitiveness.
Kim Kyunghee, Mayor of Icheon, stated, "For Icheon Science High School to successfully establish itself, close cooperation with the local community is more important than anything else," adding, "To this end, we hope the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education will positively consider introducing a local talent admission track."
