The Nobel Committee announced the recipients of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on October 6, 2025 (local time).

The joint recipients are Mary Branco from the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle, United States; Fred Ramsdell from Sonoma Biotherapeutics in San Francisco, United States; and Simon Sakaguchi from Osaka University in Japan.

The committee stated that these scientists were awarded for elucidating the mechanism of 'peripheral immune tolerance,' the principle by which the human immune system prevents itself from attacking the body.

Ole Kampe, Chair of the Nobel Committee, remarked, "Their discoveries have been crucial in understanding how the immune system works and why we do not all suffer from severe autoimmune diseases."
